These simple chocolate chocolate chip cookies are perfect for beginners, yielding soft, chewy results every time.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  3. Place the butter in a large, microwave-safe bowl.
  4. Microwave the butter for about 40 seconds until it is about 90% melted.
  5. Whisk the butter until it is completely melted and smooth.
  6. Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar to the melted butter.
  7. Mix the sugars and butter until they are well-combined.
  8. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  9. Add the large egg to the mixture.
  10. Mix until the vanilla and egg are fully incorporated.
  11. Add the all-purpose flour to the bowl.
  12. Add the unsweetened cocoa powder.
  13. Add the baking soda.
  14. Add the kosher salt.
  15. Mix the dough until the dry ingredients are just combined.
  16. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  17. Stir in the semisweet chocolate chips.
  18. Scoop out 1.5 tablespoons of dough per cookie (using a medium cookie scoop).
  19. Place the scooped dough balls 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  20. Bake for 7-10 minutes.
  21. Bake until the cookies are set around the edges.
  22. The cookies will be puffy and still look slightly underbaked in the middle.
  23. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Always measure flour by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling off.
Don’t overmix the dough once flour is added to keep cookies tender.
Cookies will firm up as they cool, so don’t overbake them.
Parchment paper prevents sticking and makes clean-up easier.
