- 1 cup warm (not hot) milk regular milk or non-dairy
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup melted butter regular or non-dairy
- 2 tablespoon maple syrup
- 3 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon yogurt plain and unsweetened
- 2 ½ cups regular all purpose flour or 2 cups gluten-free all purpose flour
- ⅓ cup softened butter regular or non-dairy
- ¼ cup sugar
- 4 tablespoon rainbow sprinkles add more as needed
- 2 tablespoon softened butter regular or non-dairy
- 2 oz cream cheese regular or non-dairy
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- Prepare the dough by mixing the warm milk, melted butter, maple syrup, and salt together.
- Sprinkle the active dry yeast evenly across the top of the mixture.
- Stir gently.
- Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes.
- Add the flour (2 ½ cups of regular flour or 2 cups of gluten-free flour).
- Mix until a dough forms.
- If using gluten-free flour, use your hands to work in the non-dairy yogurt into the dough.
- Leave the dough in the bowl.
- Form the dough into a round mound.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel.
- Allow the dough to sit for an hour to rise.
- After the dough has risen, place it on a floured surface.
- Roll the dough into a ¼ inch oval or rectangle.
- Spread the softened butter to cover the dough.
- Top with the sugar.
- Top with the rainbow sprinkles.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll the dough into a log.
- Cut the log into about 10 pinwheels (or use a pizza cutter to slice strips and roll each into a pinwheel).
- Place the pinwheels into a baking dish so they are close but not touching.
- Cover the pinwheels with a towel.
- Set aside for another 30 minutes for a second rise.
- Remove the towel.
- Bake the rolls in the oven for about 35 minutes for regular rolls, or 25-30 minutes for gluten-free rolls (or until golden).
- While the rolls are baking, make the cream cheese frosting.
- Use an electric hand mixer to mix together the softened butter, powdered sugar, and cream cheese.
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly.
- Spread the icing over the rolls.
