Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • granulated sugar for rolling
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • pinch of salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Cream the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the large egg to the mixture.
  4. Add the molasses to the mixture.
  5. Mix until the egg and molasses are fully incorporated into the butter and sugar mixture.
  6. Add the all-purpose flour to the mixture.
  7. Add the baking soda to the mixture.
  8. Add the salt to the mixture.
  9. Add the ground ginger to the mixture.
  10. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  11. Scoop the dough into balls, slightly larger than a golf ball.
  12. Roll each dough ball generously in granulated sugar.
  13. Place the rolled dough balls onto a baking sheet.
  14. Bake for 9-11 minutes.
  15. Remove the cookies from the oven.
  16. Let the cookies rest on the baking pan for a few minutes.
  17. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  18. Combine the 1 tablespoon of melted butter, 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup, 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
  19. Whisk the maple glaze ingredients together until smooth and thick.
  20. If the glaze is too thick, add a very tiny bit more milk, one teaspoon at a time, until it reaches a dippable consistency.
  21. Dip one side of each cooled cookie into the maple glaze.
  22. Run the edge of the dipped cookie along the side of the bowl to remove any excess glaze drips.
  23. Set the glazed cookies on a piece of wax paper.
  24. Add a few festive sprinkles to the glazed cookies before the glaze sets.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened, not melted, for the best cookie texture.
Measure flour by spooning it into the cup and leveling it off to avoid dense cookies.
Do not overmix the dough once flour is added; stop as soon as it comes together.
Cool cookies completely before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting.
