The perfect beginner-friendly recipe for classic soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies, made with simple ingredients and clear instructions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1¼ cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup cold butter
  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips (1011 oz)
  • ¼ cup walnut pieces (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
  2. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3. In a smaller mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda.
  4. Cut the cold butter into smaller pieces.
  5. In a larger mixing bowl, combine the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract.
  6. Gently stir the dry ingredients into the butter and sugar mixture until just combined.
  7. Add in the chocolate chips and optional walnuts.
  8. Mix gently until the mix-ins are fully combined.
  9. Using a full-sized spoon (tablespoon), scoop cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 6-7 minutes, or until the tops of the cookies are golden brown.
  11. Remove the cookies from the oven.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes.
  13. Serve warm for the softest cookies.

Notes

Do not overmix the dough after adding flour; mix until just combined.
Use cold butter, cut into pieces, to prevent cookies from spreading too much.
Keep a close eye on your cookies during the last minute of baking to avoid overbaking.
For easy cleanup and non-stick results, always use parchment paper on your baking sheets.
